... the old house was not paid for & Lee and I took on a debt of $2,500.00 to start off on.
When I married Dad gave me 25 silver dollars. We bought our furniture, bedroom suit - cook stove - dishes - pots & pans, table & had some money left. A Mr. McElroy & a Mr. Nelson had a merchantile store in C. Pt [Center Point, Texas] & they fed us the rst season all on credit. It was in August we took in our rst cash. Sold some watermelons & later tomatoes, our sales.

Those days our came in 24 & 48 lb sacks only. Sugar came in barrells & was weighed out by the merchant. Also crackers - coffee - apples & dried fruits were handled in bulk.
You could build a house for $150.00 usually started out with 2 front rooms - a shed room or leanto on the back - a re place - no ceilings & no screens - etc. Lumber sold around $6.00 to $8.00 a 1000 ft but ooring around $12.00.
Water was carried or hauled from the river or a creek. Washing was done on a wash board - no wringer - a big pot for hot water & all clothes were boiled.
