When we lived in Kansas the Cherokee Strip was opened up for homesteads. Dad was down there & made the race & located & staked out a 160 acre homestead. He never went back to settle on the land.

... younger than Mother. Addie died while a small child. Grandpa Bean, known as “Snap Bean”, after he came back from the war, married his brother’s widow. He was our Mother’s uncle & became her step father. He was a poor manager & soon got heavily in debt & mortgaged the ranch. It was sold at Sheriff’s sale in Lampasas. Mother said her Mother cried her eyes out about losing the ranch & everything she had.
