LA (Leander Antonio) Mosty 7/10/1851 - 11/25/1917
la mosty was born July 10, 1851 and is the father of Harvey Mosty and his seven siblings. LA’s father was Niclous Musty who immigrated to the United States in the early-to-mid 1800s (Note that his name on the census record (at top right) is spelled “Nicholaz”!). LA, as he was most often called, lived in hard times during the late 1800s. After the civil war he took a job with the Swift Company in Kansas City, Kansas. Later he began driving cattle from South Texas to Kansas and became known, according the San Antonio Express News, as the Cattle King of Texas. LA & his family, including Harvey Mosty, moved from Hepler, Kansas to Kerrville, Texas in 1894. The rest is history.
Note: “LA” seems to be the most common name used; this is what is written on his death certi cate (see image at right). The June 14, 1860 census record (above), listing the family members, lists “Leander” as 8 years old - which in 1860 would put his birth about 1852; close to his recorded birth of 1851. Given this information, it is reasonable to conclude that “LA Mosty” is in fact “Leander Antonio (Musty) Mosty”.
Why the last name changed from “Musty” to “Mosty” is unknown, to me at least. Research on the internet indicates that LA & his younger brother Albert may be the only siblings having their last name changed to Mosty.
