... looking for us & took us to their camp on the Gus Nois farm a few miles below Menard on the San Saba River. Dad & Lee had worked the winter there grubbing & clearing bottom land that was heavily timbered - at $4.00 an acre. When they measured up in the Spring they had 4 acres - $16 for the entire winter. Spring & summer Dad worked in the elds at 75ยข a day & Lee was thrown in extra helping handling irrigation water in the elds. We caught lots of large cat sh & rolled in meal & baked in a skillet ...

Late summer we left Menard for Junction. Then on to Kerrville. Coming over the Divide there was no water except wells at the ranches. We stopped at a ranch owned by Capt. Schreiner & Sidney Rees. Jack Rees was on the ranch at that time & he charges us 10 cents a bucket for water.
Reaching Johnson Fork we camped a few days near Sunset School. Our rst stay in Kerr Co. We came on to Kerrville & camped on the river about where Water ...
