... Howard - all were exceedingly kind and considerate of us. Mara Clayton (now Ma Green) a young ne looking girl but she also was very nice to two green country hicks. That rst Sunday at the Baptist Church was the rst time I had ever been in a church service & also the rst time I had ever heard an organ played.

... in the River down from the Mosty greenhouses in the lower end of the SI [Schreiner Institute, now Schreiner University.] water hole. Rev. Caughran was the preacher at that time. One winter around 1903 or 1904 I went to Rocksprings to stay a month on Uncle Jack Hamlyn’s Ranch. The stage left Kerrville at noon & reached the head springs of the North Fork about 10 at nite. A Mr. Joy had a bunch of tents there for travelers. The place was called “Bone Yard”.
